Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds |
So what makes a good pet canine companion? I guess the answer differs for every individual and their specific needs or desires. This post will be written from a research-based perspective, so not to be biased from those breeds I absolutely adore (I'm looking at you, the undeniably gorgeous German Shepherd breed!) So sit back, with (or without) your furry friend by your side - you never know, your favourite dog breeds may just make the list in all of their glory!
As one of the most popular dog breeds as stated by The Kennel Club, they absolutely had to make this list! With a friendly temperament and patient nature, this is a perfect choice for households with young children or for those with additional needs, a Golden Retriever will undoubtedly be loved by the whole family. They are a medium-large breed originally bred in Scotland to assist hunters in retrieving their game birds, hence the name we know them by. These are beautiful dogs who are intelligent, loyal and hardworking - notably with a seemingly charming smile, gorgeous shiny coat and an always-wagging tail. You will definitely recognise a Golden Retriever when you see one!
★ Beagle
Beagles were originally bred to hunt for small animals such as rabbits, many countries still use these dogs today for the very same purpose. Most notable for being adaptable, bold and hardy little dogs, not much could ever scare a Beagle. They have an extremely loving, yet curious nature which can make them seem a little naughty at times, but really Beagles just have an extreme zest for adventure and excitement in their lives! They're an ideal choice for first-time pet owners as they are not known to be aggressive or frustrated easily, and much prefer to spend time with their beloved owners doing whatever they are up to, even if to a Beagle, it isn't particular interesting - who could resist those big brown eyes! Their small-medium size makes them a good choice for those in smaller housing spaces or for owners with a preference for smaller companions. If you have a Beagle, prepared to be stopped multiple times during a walk to meet each and every dog along the way - they are a very sociable breed with a desire to meet other pooches and people on a regular basis.
Mixed-Breed Dogs |
Oh Pugs, how sweet they are with their short snouts, adorable wrinkles and curly tail! First bred in China over 2,000 years ago, these darling dogs have a smooth and glossy coat and were bred to be loving companions to their people. As one of the oldest dog breeds (being traced all the way back to 400BC!) these little dogs measure approximately just 25cm tall, which although small, makes them one of the largest toy breeds. Pugs are known to be very lively and love absolutely anyone who shows them an ounce of affection! When not snuggling with their owners, Pugs make fantastic watchdogs as they are quite an alert breed who will undoubtedly try their best to protect their home and the people inside. If you are looking for an affectionate dog with a big personality, this is the breed for you!
★ Irish Setter
Irish Setters were originally used in Ireland as gundogs. The beauty of their red, shiny fur extended the popularity quite quickly amongst budding dog-lovers and before long, became a staple breed in many households as they are also fantastic family dogs. Irish Setters are also popular for use in dog contests such as Crufts, due to their majestic, elegant appearance. Despite their elegant appearance, these are large and extremely spirited dogs with a love of exercise and being the centre of attention at all times, so make a good match for both families with young children or those with a passion for the great outdoors.

★ French Bulldog
A miniature version of the lesser popular Bulldog breed, French Bulldogs are pocket-sized bundles of cuteness with their signature 'bat ears'. Despite its name, French Bulldogs were actually first bred in England simply to be a smaller version for the then popular Bulldog, which were already fantastic companion dogs, but now in a smaller size! Unlike their larger counterparts, French Bulldogs have a sweet and innocent appearance which captures the hearts of many. They are well-built dogs with a fair amount of strength, but aren't typically aggressive and would much rather use this strength to win a game of tug of war with their owners, as preferred by their playful nature. Not only are they good for families with or without children, but French Bulldogs are also fantastic dogs to welcome into a home with cats or other canines, as they are very adaptable to change or situations they have not experienced before.
★ Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were bred for, unsurprisingly, royalty! These beautiful and small toy dogs, like Golden Retrievers, have a tail that just doesn't stop wagging. They are always happy and have a gorgeous silky coat which comes in a variety of colour patterns. It's not hard to see why the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world! Both loving and playful, it is hard to ever find this breed unhappy, as they love nothing more than to make friends with both people and pets.
★ Bernese Mountain Dog
The Bernese Mountain Dog is a breed that can handle anything and does not shy away from change or difficult situations. Originally bred in Switzerland to herd cattle, these hardworking pooches are on the larger side, which means there is a lot more of them to love! Undeniably beautiful to look at, the Bernese Mountain Dog is incredibly strong and makes for a protective and trusting companion for individuals and families alike. These gentle giants have a tough exterior but loveable soft eyes and a gorgeous tri-colour fur pattern which makes them instantly recognisable.
Dogs At Risk Of Heatstroke |
These dogs were bred for both the purpose of helping fishermen on their travels, and for being a loving companion, which they excel at. These medium-large gundogs are sturdy and bold, more so than many other breeds of this type. The Labrador Retriever is an all-rounder, fitting the bill as a show dog, hunting dog, sniffer dog, guide dog and of course, a very loving pet! It was even voted as the US's favourite dog breed 28 times in a row! If you need a reliable dog who has a willingness to please, this is the perfect breed to choose! Like the Newfoundland, Labrador Retrievers are very fond of the water and make fantastic swimmers when out and about! These dogs are highly trainable due to the willingness to please and natural intelligence, so getting your Labrador Retriever to learn even the most tedious of commands should be no issue.
★ Hungarian Vizsla
Much like the recently-discussed Labrador Retriever, the Hungarian Vizsla is an all-around winner for on-land hunting, water retrieving and being a top-notch companion. First discovered in Hungary over 1,000 years ago, the Hungarian Vizsla is a very eye-catching breed for their rich red fur and has been featured in many 10th century artworks and even some 14th century literature because of this. The breed nearly became extinct after the First and Second World War after targeted attacks on Hungary, but thankfully many Hungarian refugees fled and took their dogs with them, and is now why this breed is accessible worldwide and still growing in popularity to this day. Personality wise, these dogs are certainly the life and soul of every household, with a lively character that needs to be met with a lot of excitement and attention. These dogs thrive with an owner who is sensitive to their needs and are willing to put the time in to care for them, they have plenty of love to give back in return! Hungarian Vizslas are also athletic dogs who would much prefer tiring themselves with exercise then sleeping on the sofa, so work well with people who are also athletic, or spend a considerable amount of time outdoors. With superb noses and a love of retrieving, hide-and-seek-style games certainly appeal to a Hungarian Vizsla!
★ Shih Tzu
Breeds That Are Keen Pack Dogs |
★ Lhasa Apso
This beautiful breed was bred for thousands of years for royalty, and it isn't hard to see why! These protective pooches make for wonderful protection dogs and spent a lot of their early life doing just that. As one of the first breeds to be used as a companion and guard dog, the breed was named after the sacred city of Lhasa in Tibet. Lhasa Apsos may seem small on the outside, but they have a mighty personality and are seemingly always happy. Their coat is a long and dense double coat, which really gives the breed an air of nobility and beauty.
★ Pomeranian
Surprisingly, one of the smallest dog breeds actually descended from much larger sledding dogs and is now recognised as a small, fox-like dog with an elegant exterior. The Pomeranian never under-delivers on character with their clear need for independence, yet they are equally as friendly with other people and animals. Their fur makes a Pomeranian instantly recognisable, as does the typical-Pomeranian facial features, long snout, pricked up ears and alert, yet loving eyes. These proud dogs are rarely dirty, as they take great pride in cleaning themselves regularly and avoid getting messy when out and about, so bathing a Pomeranian should be no trouble at all - they may even enjoy it! Many assume that smaller dogs like Pomeranians are less intelligent than other dogs, but for this breed in particular, they find training an easy task. Pomeranians are both eager to learn and loyal to their owners, so training shouldn't be too much hassle at all, pair that with their overwhelming affection, and you have yourself a perfect little companion!
★ Toy Poodle
The Toy Poodle is a small, elegant dog with a characteristically-poodle slender muzzle and long neck. As with all other poodle breeds, the Toy Poodle possesses tight, curly fur and can be styled just like any other Poodle would be. Toy Poodles are very clever and use this intelligence to keep themselves busy and love to be challenged. Paired with bucketloads of positivity, this breed should have no trouble being trained! The Toy Poodle is certainly partial to a good run around, and are particularly speedy when they need to be, excelling in an agility-based environment, yet looking equally as elegant in the process. At a small 10" tall, these mini-sized Poodles are both charming and popular, and can fill any home with a lot of joy!
Why Dogs Don't Like Hugs |
★ Boston Terrier
Boston Terriers have been popular since their creation more than 100 years ago in 1893 when they were bred to be fighting dogs in the USA, but thankfully now are instead kept as loving companions for families all over the globe. As the smallest of all Terriers, the Boston Terrier is a good choice for those looking for a smaller pet, without losing their ancestors' love of exercise. Boston Terriers maintain a stocky and strong build and large eyes with an intelligence which opens them to sophisticated training. Almost no two Boston Terriers are the same with varying personalities between lively, calm or even stubborn, so owning more than one at a time would be an interesting task to see just what type of character they will develop.
★ Border Collie
Everyone knows just how intelligent Border Collies are, as highly trainable and probably the best herding dogs to ever walk the Earth, it's hard to find reasons not to love this breed. These medium-sized dogs are in their element with training and agility, and would never disobey their owners. As one of the most intelligent breeds in the world, Border Collies love to be challenged and have a desire to be entertained or stimulated for much of their lives in order to keep up with their overly-absorbent brains. Stimulating exercise is a fantastic way of doing this, combining two of the things the love the most will reap rewarding results! This breed is both energetic and fun to be around, but can also be alert and protective if they feel that danger is looming.
★ Basset Hound
Ah yes, the Hush Puppy dog, iconic, but it has so much more to its name than this! The Basset Hound is a charming breed with a very calm, placid nature, with a short but heavy build. Originally bred to track rabbits in France during the 16th century, these dogs can be extremely sensitive to their owners and are normally the first to notice when something isn't quite right, so make for a good companion for those seeking a support dog. Basset Hound are extremely independent, so won't be constantly bugging you for attention or exercise, and will usually entertain themselves about the house without much bother or need to be stimulated.
Meet The Dachshund |
It's clear that German Shepherds are popular dogs, and for very good reason. They are extremely smart! These medium-large dogs were first founded in, you guessed it - Germany, to herd livestock, but are now making some of the best companions for families everywhere. As another all-around good dog breed, there's not much to say that isn't perfect about a German Shepherd, they are protective of their home and people and are exceptional at agility tasks, all while holding a proud, majestic exterior. A popular choice for the police force, German Shepherds are fiercely loyal and confident, making them an easy selection of guard dog. Despite their protective nature, German Shepherds aren't aggressive by nature if socialised properly at a young age and bond well with familiar faces, be that of people or pets. These eager-to-learn dogs just love to please!
So, did you spot a breed you are fond of? How many on this list do you agree with? Perhaps you have one (or more!) of these breeds already in your home, if so, may it come as the best news one can hear - you have a really special pooch!
